NOLA festivals in June and July

Festival Season in New Orleans is never really here, i.e. that it starts or stops at some point, since it’s always here, all year round. There’s always something cooking in NOLA, literally and metaphorically, and whether you’re coming in May or in November, there is no time during the year that this city will be sleeping – at best taking a nap but not more than that.

Sure, there’s things of epic proportions – such as Mardi Gras or the Jazz and Heritage Festival – but all other festivals are worth visiting since they target all sorts of specific cultural, historical or social aspects of life in the region. In other words, there’s something for everybody in NOLA and that includes you specifically. With that said, here’s a brief overview of what June and July will be offering in terms of festivals.

June

The Cajun Zydeco Festival and the Creole Tomato Festival in June have already passed but don’t despair, there’s still Festigals coming up. FestiGals (June 20-23) is an event created for women by women, a weekend that seeks to empored women and all that the female side of humanity stands for – beauty, nourishment and, of course, loads of fun and joy. The festival also features a number of key-speakers such as actress Rhonda Shear, former Miss Louisiana, as well as famous entrepreneur Amilya Antonetti. There’s also a number of other speakers who will talk on a variety of subjects, spanning from cosmetics, healthy lifestyles, success, entrepreneurship and others.

July

July will see a total number of 4 festivals – Essence Festival (July 4-7), Bastille Day (July 12-14), San Fermin in Nueva Orleans / Running of the Bulls (July 11-14) and Tales of the Cocktail (July 17-21).

Essence Festival, sponsored by Essence magazine, is one of the biggest African American-dedicated musical festivals in the U.S. with headliners such as Beyonce, Jill Scott and LL Cool J but also a variety of other, no less interesting and inspiring acts, such as Bid Daddy Kane, Blackstreet, Faith Evans and more. The festival will also feature a number of empowering seminars and talks on fitness, health and nutrition, politics, civil rights and, and, and.

Bastille Day and Running of the Bulls will be coinciding this year. The first one is a commeration of French Independence and NOLA is just the right place for this, being „Most French of American Cities“. Organized by the Alliance Française of New Orleans the festival will see fireworks, parades, a mass and a wreath-laying ceremony, a picnic and more. Running of the Bulls, on the other hand, is a rather joyful reenactement of the Spanish Encierro, with „Roller Bulls“ chasing after people and whacking them, once they catch up with them.

Finally, Tales of the Cocktail, for the 11th consecutive time, is 5 days of cocktails, food and meaningful exchange with the brightest minds in the world of mixology – local and from abroad. There will be mixing competitions, famous and new liqour brands showcasings, awards, book presentations and talks. If you’re a cocktail enthusiast, be sure to drop by.
