NOLA is slowly but surely expanding its biking facilities as more and more of its inhabitants and visitors jump on the biking wagon. Why are so many people becoming fans? Biking is healthy, environmentally-friendly, and enjoyable. As the city of New Orleans is building more bike lanes, trails, racks and storing facilities, small and large organizations are helping to build up the momentum with creative efforts of their own. See some of them here:
- Plan B: The New Orleans Community Bike Project opens its workshop doors to lend tools and give advice for DIY bike fix-up projects. The shop also offers regular bike-building classes and women-only nights to help spread mechanical know-how in a safe community environment.
- Bike Easy organizes Bike Valets at big NOLA events to help keep everyone’s bike safe and leads Bicycle Second Line at festivals and parades to get more people out and ‘cycling.
- Where Ya’ Rack tracks current bike rack locations with user help and coordinates sponsors and volunteers in the building of new racks where needed.
For the NOLA visitor, biking through New Orleans may be one of the best ways to see all that it has to offer, riding at your own pace and choosing your own stops. If you decide to give it a try yourself, we hope you enjoy your open-air exploration of our beautiful city! It’s a great way to wind through NOLA’s streets and discover all sorts of hidden surprises in their true vibrant colors.
