In the previous post we wrote about Ann Rice and her beautiful descriptions of New Orleans. There are other well-known writers though, who have lived in New Orleans, getting inspired from the city and its beautiful southern atmosphere.
William Faulkner, The Nobel Prize Literature winner of 1949, began his career in New Orleans’ French Quarter, where he wrote his first novel, and later used to stay at the Hotel Monteleone. The four-story house on Pirate Alley, which Faulkner shared with his artist friend William Spratling, is now a famous tourist destination.
The streetcar in the Garden District inspired Tenessy Williams for his famous play The Streetcar named Desire – well known and very popular, along with the movie, directed by Elia Kazan, starring Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh.
Edgar Degas, the french painter, spent several months in the city, while visiting his extended family. Even for such a short time, he managed to paint 22 works, and we won’t be mistaken to add that the spirit of New Orleans has added to his inspirational visions. Degas’ mother was a creole, born in New Orleans, and their family home on Esplanade Avenue is now a bed and breakfast hotel – a wonderful place to stay for art lovers.
