Target recently released new editions of Ann Rice’s Sleeping Beauty books. Few people know, though, that a lot of Ann Rice’s novels take place in New Orleans. The Mayfair Witches story – a several-generations-long saga about strong women and men, starting back in 16th century Scotland and coming up to modern times, takes place mostly in the famous Garden District.
Ann Rice’s beaituful descriptions of great old Garden District mansions and houses leave people wanting to go at least once in New Orleans – to smell the flowers, blooming in hot summer nights, to feel the quiet wind, briskly rustling through everlasting greens in tropical gardens, even see some ghosts of the beautiful people, having lived and danced behind the heavy drapperies, covering tall windows of southern mansions. No wonder Ann Rice is inspired so much by the city.
New Orleans has a magical sense to it, but not the kiddy magic one – when we talk about famous movies like Interview with the Vampire (starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt), we know they aren’t exactly kid-friendly. Scared or not, people come from all over the world to walk by and see the famous houses in the Garden District, First Street, and The Lafayette Cemetery. Ann Rice herself has renovated a number of historic New Orleans houses, among them the beautiful white chapel of St. Elizabeth’s Orphanage.
βIn the spring of 1988, I returned to New Orleans, and as soon as I smelled the air, I knew I was home. It was rich, almost sweet, like the scent of jasmine and roses around our old courtyard. I walked the streets, savoring that long lost perfume.β
