NOLA’s art scene is alive and bustling as the summer season is approaching. Here’s what the top galleries have lined up for you right now.
Your first stop should of course be New Orleans Museum of Arts. You’ve still got the chance to see a quite interesting exhibit - the one of Thornton Dial. His large-scale paintings, sculptures and drawings will be on display until May 20th. The 84-year old artist uses various kinds of tactile materials to create his art – found objects, plastic flowers, paint tubes, cloths, even empty tortoise shells. Wednesdays in NOMA are free. Few days ago there opened another exhibit “Leah Chase: Paintings” by Gustave Blache III. The artist has painted the 90 years old Ms Chase while she’s been at the Dooky Chase Restaurant many days and months in a row. One of the paintings has already been acquired by the National Portrait Gallery, and captures the old woman working in the kitchen. Blache’s art could leave the impression of an easy art, but let’s not forget that the simple things are sometimes the most difficult ones. While we are still at NOMA – next Movies in the Garden screening will be on May 11th with “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, starting at 5pm with Crepes a la Cart and Green to go NOLA.
